About this map

El Portal's tree canopy, mapped from Miami-Dade County aerial photography and refined by local observations.

How trees were mapped

Two published research models use established computer-vision methods. We chose them because one measures total tree cover and the other outlines individual tree crowns.

Total tree cover: Restor TCD (SegFormer B3). Developed by Restor and ETH Zurich, it identifies foliage across the photograph. We chose it to estimate canopy coverage, including woodland where neighboring trees blend together.

Individual crowns: Detectree2 (Mask R-CNN). Developed at the University of Cambridge, it draws the spread of each tree's foliage. We chose its flexi model, trained on urban trees and tropical forests, as a starting point for El Portal's mix of streets and woodland.

These initial estimates need local review, especially for palms, small trees and overlapping crowns. Species and field measurements come from people.

Model licenses

Restor's canopy model: CC BY-NC 4.0 requires credit and limits reuse to noncommercial purposes. SegFormer also has NVIDIA terms limiting use to research or evaluation. Restor's supporting software uses Apache 2.0, which allows reuse with its license notices.

Detectree2's crown model: CC BY 4.0 allows reuse, including commercial use, with credit and changes identified. Its software uses the MIT license, allowing reuse with the copyright and license notice retained.

Sources and data

County imagery has approximately 3-inch (7.6 cm) pixels. Records refer to 2025/2026; the exact photography date is unconfirmed. Canopy coverage is an image-based estimate, separate from residents' edits to tree records.
